| GoodBookStall Review: (by Ian Gibson) A book from the pens of a priest who is also a Management teacher and a person who has been a PCC member and both of whom have lived through those interminable tortures we call Parochial Church Councils. What could be better – you may ask? For those who are used to being called to the great office of PCC first and then asking the question, “well what do PCCs do?”, then this book is a must for you all. Chapter by chapter the book explains the background and history of the august body, explains what it is, the function, the way it is constructed and the responsibilities it has to the whole government of the Church of England. It also mentions the terms of office, the necessity of working with others, the frequency and other legal requirements. But it presents them all in such a way as to be readable and almost enjoyable; gone is the stark paragraph by paragraph legalese of other handbooks, but narrative, sometimes humorous, at all times useful. Also included as appendices are useful reading lists, the actual legal framework and a great index. For the Church of England a necessity, for others probably useful for ideas. |
